GPS attendance and field staff tracking: a guide for employers

How to use GPS, selfie attendance and visit logs to manage field teams fairly — and where to draw the line on tracking.

Decide what you need to know

Most businesses need three things: that the person started work, which customers they met, and what came out of each visit. Selfie + GPS attendance answers the first, scheduled visits with check-in answer the second, and a short meeting note answers the third. Continuous live tracking is rarely needed for this.

Track duty time, not private time

Limit location visibility to duty hours between punch IN and punch OUT, tell employees clearly what is recorded and why, and put it in your HR policy. People accept tracking that is predictable and tied to work; they resist tracking that feels hidden.

Make visits the unit of work

Assign visits in advance, let staff start and complete a meeting from the app, and record the person met and the outcome. Managers then review pending and overdue visits instead of asking for updates on calls. Visit history also becomes useful sales data.

Roll it out with one team first

Start with one field team for a month, fix the friction they report, then extend. Measure simple things: on-time starts, visits completed versus planned, and time from visit to follow-up.
